Teacher guide Improving year 7 literacy performance

TLF ID S7029

This teacher resource describes a successful strategy developed by Seymour P-12 College in Victoria to improve year 7 students' performance in reading beyond the expected maturational increment. This was achieved through changes in timetabling; allocating students to classes based on current reading levels; and reducing the teacher/student ratio for students with the greatest need. The resource is organised in nine sections: Summary; Target student group; Method; Results; Lessons learned; Next steps; Research base; Further reading and links; and Contacts.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for teachers and schools seeking to improve their students' attainment of the Literacy general capability and the year 7 English achievement standard in relation to reading. It describes strategies all schools can implement. These include timetabling changes to schedule all year 7 English classes at the same time before recess and organising class composition by reading age.
  • The resource can also reinforce teachers' understanding that improvement in literacy leads to an improvement in motivation. Seymour P-12 College found that their year 7 strategy led to improvements in the self-esteem, work ethic and engagement of students.
